Description: Company expects to expedite hiring process
Not only will Walmart drivers be making, on average, $87,500 a year beginning in February, but the company says it will be hiring hundreds of drivers this year to join its fleet. The company also plans to implement a new process in its hiring in order to speed things up, expediting the time it takes to complete a new hire. Company representatives said that, previously, candidates were given the opportunity to perform one assessment for which they were evaluated on their driving skills — something the company calls “pre-trip inspection.” A new process has been introduced, however, giving targeted one-on-one mentoring from veteran drivers. Walmart’s new process has already cut in half the time between an initial interview and a mandatory driving assessment. “I’ve never seen a transportation company hire so quickly,” said Lori Furnell, Walmart’s director of driver talent acquisition. “Our drivers are entering the program fully confident and prepared to perform this critical element of our retail business.” Walmart says new driver candidates frequently report the culture and reputation for professionalism as top reasons for applying to the company.

Keep on truckin': $87,500 annual salaries awaiting would-be Walmart drivers

Description: Walmart is looking for a few good (long-distance) men and women! The retail conglomerate is seeking to hire hundreds of truck drivers after adding 1,400 to its payroll in 2018. “We’re leaning heavily on the expertise of our Walmart road team and our certified driver trainers to grow our skilled fleet of professional drivers,” said Walmart’s director of driver talent acquisition Lori Furnell. Currently, there’s a nationwide shortage of drivers, which has boosted retail prices and freight costs. The chief economist of the American Trucking Associations, Bob Costello, projected the industry could require 175,000 more drivers in the next seven years. Walmart drivers will earn an extra penny per mile they drive as well as additional pay for every arrival. The total sum is about 89 cents per mile, or a whopping average of $87,500 per year, reported USA Today. This salary significantly higher than the median salary for truck drivers who make about $53,000 on national, irregular routes, according to a 2018 study by the American Trucking Associations. Walmart says the drivers are needed to deliver more goods as same-store sales hit 3% in 2018, which led to an increased demand. If you’ve got a hankerin’ to hit the open road — and get paid handsomely for your troubles — you’ll need a solid safety record and 30 months of experience over the last three years.

Description: Walmart is looking to add more truck drivers in the upcoming year as an industry-wide shortage continues to loom. And it's increasing their pay, too. In addition to the more than 1,400 truck drivers hired in 2018, Walmart stated that "hundreds more are slated to join the fleet." Plus, starting in February, drivers will earn one cent extra per mile as well as additional pay for every arrival – adding up to roughly 89 cents per mile, or an average of $87,500 per year. The median salary for a truck driver on a national, irregular route is over $53,000, according to a study last year by the American Trucking Associations. Walmart attributes the increase in hiring to delivering more goods – same-store sales hit 3 percent last year, leading to an increased demand for transportation and truck drivers. To be hired, new drivers will need to have 30 months of experience over the past three years and a good safety record. “We’re leaning heavily on the expertise of our Walmart road team and our certified driver trainers to grow our skilled fleet of professional drivers,” Lori Furnell, Walmart’s director of driver talent acquisition, said in a statement. This move by Walmart comes at a time when companies are struggling to hire truckers, amid a nationwide shortage that has pushed up freight costs and subsequently increased retail prices. Bob Costello, the chief economist of the American Trucking Associations, projected the industry could be short 175,000 drivers by 2026.
