Spring cleaning: roof edition

Permanent Linkby KateJohanson on Wed Mar 18, 2015 9:10 am

You’ve no doubt heard about the importance of spring cleaning. What you may not have heard is that it’s just as important, if not more important to focus on the exterior of your home when doing spring cleaning as it is to focus on your home’s interior. According to the National Association of Realtors, homeowners who perform regular maintenance tasks on their home’s exterior prevent structural damage, save energy, and improve the home’s resale value. When it comes to doing some maintenance on your home’s exterior, the roof is often overlooked, probably because it’s above and out-of-sight. So as you’re making a list of home improvement projects for the spring, make sure that roof and rain gutter maintenance is a priority on that list.

Maintaining your roof

While this isn’t really a do-it-yourself project, it’s important and shouldn’t be ignored. Have a professional roofer inspect your roof for any damage to the shingles or flashing. If there is any damage, the roofer will make note of it and make some recommendations. If your roof isn’t too old and the roof damage is limited to certain areas, a roof repair is going to be the more likely solution. If your roof is nearing the end of its expected lifespan, you may want to consider a new roof even if the damage can be repaired without a complete roof replacement. It’s important to maintain your roof so that water doesn’t get in your home and make matters a whole lot worse.

Maintaining your rain gutters

Just as important as maintaining your roof itself, it’s important to keep your rain gutters in good shape. Your rain gutters are an important part of your roofing system. They allow water to get off your roof and away from your home’s foundation. If your rain gutter system isn’t working properly, water can pool up on your roof and cause damage or it can pool up around your home’s foundation and cause damage. Make sure your gutters and downspouts are clear of any debris so that rain water can flow freely. Make sure the rain gutters are securely fastened all the way around your roof’s edge. If your rain gutters are badly corroded or otherwise damaged, it’s probably time for a whole new rain gutter system. Though the thought of paying for new rain gutters probably isn’t very exciting, you’ll be grateful you did it when the spring rain hits.
